My Bowerbird Project..

I noticed something the other day.. Over the years, in my true bowerbird fashion, I have managed to buy, thrift and collect more yarn than I ever realised I owned.  It has ended up, scattered around my house, in calico bags and boxes, waiting to be used for one project or another.  But it seems, that over time, I've got left over yarn, or the project didn't work out or I got frustrated and pulled it all apart.  So this year I have set myself a goal, one project.. the most basic I can think of... that will use all the yarn I have tucked away.  By winter I hope I will have enough little granny squares to create, one giant and colourful Bowerbird Blanket.
Fingers crossed..

My Creative Space..Yellow

So this morning I was looking at some lovely new fabric over here and I was thinking about pretty colour palettes. I'm loving really bright colours and patterns at the moment and realised I kept picking out yellow designs.  Then I noticed my little Pikatchu money box and my glue stick and highlighter.  My whole world was turning yellow.  I began to collect all the bits of yellow throughout the day and by this afternoon I was a little bowerbird determined to find all the yellow objects in the house, even the pantry.  I think it might just be my favourite colour.

My yellow collection... From sandpaper to honey and tarot cards.

A few details... a love all the shades of yellow together. So happy!

It was so much fun, I began to wonder what other colours I could find.. But that is for another day. Now I have to put everything back.. and hope that Olive my mischievous cat hasn't begun to investigate the cornflour yet.

My New Toy!

Look what the lovely postman left on my door step this afternoon..

A sparkling new Instax 210..

I've been after one of these for a little while after playing with my sister's Instax mini.  Nothing beats instant film and opening the Instax box today, I felt like a little kid with a new toy.  It's huge, well not huge, bigger than expected and I'm quite little, so we are a little out of proportion together. I think I giggled every time I took a photo.

So, the photos, well I must say it takes a little getting used to.  The lighting is interesting and the focus is going to take a little practice, but hey, I'm not using it for amazing photos, I'm using it for fun. If I get a good photo, that will be nice too. Can't wait to try it out on some unsuspecting friends.  But for now, here is a little tea cup shot.

And now I've got one, I'm going to join the Dainty Squid in 52 Weeks of Instax.  How exciting!
Have you got an instax? What are your thoughts?

Flea Market Finds..

Hello there my thrifting friends.  I do hope you have had a little moment to visit and op shop or two this week, perhaps even a market.  It's lovely to see everyone getting back into the thrifty swing of things.  To check out everyone's finds from last week just pop over here.

This week I did a spot of op shopping on Friday and as always I found a few things that I wasn't expecting at all.  That's what I love about thrifting, it's like a weekly treasure hunt.  I found a little goldmine of lovely vintage crockery at the local MS shop.  I must remember to visit more often.

I came away with a cute little bowl, a gorgeous brass plate and quite an interesting ornate vase, which is going to be this week's Restyle project.  I also found a nice little scarf and my favourite find of the week, an Art Deco Style vintage handbag from Sweet Lily.

I can't wait to see you finds from the week!  To play along just leave a comment and add your flea market blog post link in the Linky below so we can all check out your goodies. The Clean Up begins..

By Alli Coate via decor8

Honestly I'm finding it really difficult to get back to normal blogging after the week's events.  I would usually share a lovely room or pretty outfit but nothing seems to fit right today.  I think of all those people that have lost everything and just can't fathom how they must be feeling this morning as they to sweep the mud and debris from their homes.  As the clean up begins, there are so many wonderful projects and ways you can help which I have listed over here.  A lovely project I'm going to be helping out with is Hope Softies.  For more information, pop over to Steph at Mon Petit Poppet. One little softie can be such a comfort for a child who has lost everything.  I'll be back on my sewing machine making more designs for my little shop too, so do pop by and have a look.  Thank you so much for your support. I just love this blogging community!

Every Bit Helps..

via Voice Photography
I've been glued to the TV for the past 24 hours, as I'm sure many of you have and I'm just overwhelmed with the devastation that is taking place in Queensland.  My family lives in Brisbane and I'm so happy they are high and dry, but my heart goes out to those who are not so fortunate.  I've been sitting here, desperate to help in some way and have been so inspired by the wonderful spirit in the crafting community, so I have fired up my little sewing machine.

I have created a bigcartel shop selling my Sophie Isobel Designs handmade brooches and will be donating 100% of the proceeds to the Premier's Flood Relief Appeal.  I am offering free shipping world wide and would love your support to raise much needed funds to help those people so greatly affected by these floods.  I will be making more brooches through the coming weeks so please pop in and have a look.

There are so many other wonderful crafters supporting these efforts too, for more information go to Handmade Help or Make it Perfect

Thank you so much for your support!

A Quiet Morning..

I'm having a quiet morning here at the Library Adventures cottage doing a spot of sewing and organising my fabric stash, while Olive keeps me company.

She does make a wonderful assistant, at least until she tries to attack the sewing machine.

We are also closely watching the news for updates on the devastating floods that are sweeping through Queensland and making phone calls to our families who live in Brisbane and Kilcoy.   My thoughts and love are with all those who are being affected by this tragedy, especially the people of Toowoomba. The Flood Appeal continues and you can find out further information and donate here.

Project Restyle #1

I'm really excited to be joining Project Restyle this year created by the fabulous girls from A Beautiful Mess and Smile and Wave.  I often alter my thrifted finds but rarely blog about it, as it's often a late minute, running out the door, grab the scissors kind of affair. So being part of this project gives me even more reason to get out the scissors and sewing machine to reinvent and restyle and share the results.

My first restyle of the year is this dress I blogged about last month.  I wore it a few times but didn't really love the length, so this morning I decided to chop it off and make it into a shirt.  Easiest restyle ever.

Result.. I love it and I know I will get twice as much wear out of it now.
Jeans: Dotti
Belt: Sportsgirl

Check out the Project Restyle flickr pool for all the great restyling taking place and if you want to join just pop over and visit A Beautiful Mess.  While you're there check out her first restyle for the year, a fabulous pair of vintage shoes

Happy Restyling!

Flea Market Finds..

Happy Flea Market Finds! I do hope you have had a lovely week of thrifting and op shopping, I know I certainly have.  It is so lovely to see some new friends playing along over the last few weeks, including the lovely Apron Thrift Girl, who enjoys all things second hand as much as I do! So what have you found this week?

As you may have read earlier in the week, I had a lovely op shopping outing with a friend from Melbourne, who had a fabulous eye for quirky bits and pieces and after rummaging through all the op shops in town, I came home with a bag of cuteness.

I'm always on the look out for a lovely crochet blanket and I finally found one with some lovely bright colours.  I also found a really sweet pair of vintage Jane Debster heels and a cute little print of Bonnie (beret and all).

Who can resist bows and blankets? And for a grand total of $10, I'm very happy indeed.

I can't wait to see you finds from the week!  To play along just leave a comment and add your flea market blog post link in the Linky below so we can all check out your goodies. It would be just so sweet of you to link back here from you blog too, so that others can play along.  Remember you can play any time during the week! Have you ever tried green tea ice cream?  I hadn't until recently at Taro's Ramen Cafe in Brisbane city and I must say I was surprised at how delightfully yummy it was.  It is not sweet like I expected, but lovely and refreshing and the colour is just so pretty, it is hard to resist.  I love this sweet post from Joy about her path to green tea goodness.  Feeling adventurous, why not give it a try!

Real and Beautiful Spaces

I'm always fascinated by the details of people's homes, the delightful real, beautiful and messy moments of people's lives.  I think the little moments, say so much about a person.. a piece of jewellery on a bedside table, a fridge covered with photos, a window still capturing a moment in time.

Olga Bennett's Environments project captures these moments so beautifully, looking in places others may not even notice, Olga's quiet observation brings the creative spaces of talented Melbourne artists and designers to life.  Check out Olga's blog for more of her gorgeous photography and keep an eye out for more delights from the Environments project.

Thrifting with Friends..

Have you ever noticed that when you go thrift shopping with different people, you find yourself drawn to certain items.  It's as if your friends become thrifty magnets... Let me explain.

Thrifting with my husband: As I've mentioned before, my husband doesn't mind the odd thrifting outing with me and can often be found sneaking old science textbooks into my pile of finds.   I have noticed though, that when we go thrifting together we most often buy items for the house and garden.  All my op shopped furniture has been found on outings with my hubby. I think, because he has good taste and he helps me carry things to the car.
Verdict: Shop with your husband so he can lift the heavy purchases

Thrifting with my best friend: I'm also lucky that my best friend not only likes thrifting but he is also very good at spotting things I that I love.  On our adventures we try almost every shop in town, check all the shelves and always find pretty things.  We are on the look out for vases, cups, saucers, teapots, cameras,  and ephemera and a trip is never complete without great music and at least one stop for coffee.
Verdict: Shop with your best friend for things you love and for a lovely outing

Thrifting with my sister: My sister is not the biggest fan of all things second hand.  But whenever we go together, often for something particular for a photo shoot, she finds the most amazing things. A lovely vintage Gucci watch for example, the sweetest red jacket and some really great handbags.  It seems she just always knows where to look.
Verdict: Shop with your sister because she is good luck

Thrifting with boys:  Yesterday I went op shopping with a male friend who lives in Melbourne and often thrifts for costume parties.  I found myself looking at items in a completely new light, purchasing finds that were unusual and quirky and passing things that were 'just too nanna'.
Verdict:  Shop with boys for a realistic view on things

Thrifting with girls: My favourite thrifting girl, can find the moment beautiful outfits that I would never even pick up. She has a knack for finding lovely vintage dresses and accessories. Her tips, everything deserves a second look and try things on (even if it is just for a laugh).
Verdict: Shop with girls for pretty vintage and giggles

Thifting alone: I do love to thrift alone and can spend hours pottering around, searching for a particular item, which can mean overlooking others.  I noted that on my favourite solo op shopping trips, I always find great shoes and handbags.
Verdict: Shop alone when pottering for something special or for a little peace and quiet

So perhaps there is a formula for the perfect thrifting adventure.  Try it out sometime and share your results on Flea Market Finds each Sunday.  I can't wait to show you what I picked up yesterday.

Happy Thrifting!

A Little To Do List..

So, tinniegirl has thrown down the wonderful and a slightly scary challenge of creating a to do list for 2011.  So with my little notebook and pen at the ready, this is my little list in no particular order.

Spend more time in the garden
Organise the bills
Don't bring too much work home
Finish creating a zine
Explore more of Victoria and South Australia
Send more letters
Learn a little bit of French
Remember to stay calm
Paint the lounge room
Buy a new couch
Write more often
Laugh more often
Organise my wardrobe
Become a better cook
Spend more time creating
Start and finish a little 2011 project

There it is, my list.  Doesn't look so scary after all, except maybe the organising bit (it's never been my strong point).  Pop over to tinniegirl if you would like to share your to do list.  I'm feeling a little inspired now, but where to start..  Perhaps I can pull the weeds, whilst listening to French for beginners.

The tale of The Honey Trees..

Have you even been down a blogging rabbit hole? Late at night you click on an image and it leads you on a lovely adventure? This is what happened to me last night and this is my little tale of Simon Filip and The Honey Trees.

During a little blog and flickr hop last night, I noticed a this gorgeous photo of this lovely couple and I realised, I'd seen them somewhere before.  Ah yes, I'd blogged a photo of them during blogtoberfest.  But it got me thinking, who are they are who is taking these gorgeous images.  So I began searching...

This was not as easy as I had first imagined.. but after a little more flickr hopping and profile reading, I finally found Simon Filip's website.  At last I had found the photographer behind these beautiful images.  But who were these people?  They were a little like ghosts to me now, appearing and disappearing again, beautifully ethereal and almost surreal.  It was, of all places facebook that finally gave me an answer..

This is The Honey Trees, a lovely little band from California. I was so excited, I dashed off straight away to find their EP 'Wake the Earth' on iTunes. It is just so sweet and their sound is captured so well in Simon's gorgeous photography and in their glorious music video 'To Be With You'.

So there you have it, a little trip to Wonderland and a wonderful photographer and band discovered down the blogging rabbit hole.

Journal Pages..

A few of my inspiration journal pages..

It's no secret that one of my favourite afternoon delights is to sit down with a stack of magazines, some glue and scissors and fill the pages of my inspiration journal.  I've just returned from a lovely adventure with my two favourite friends and with the sun in the sky for at least a few more hours yet,  my favourite time of day will continue until late this evening and so will my cutting and pasting.  I love summer, it is the perfect time for iced tea, rambling conversations and inspiring moments.
